Search Results and Directory Listings

You may have noticed that when you conduct a search on Google (or any other search engine) that the results you get are usually directory listings.

In the words of Julius Sumner Miller: "Why is it so?"

Well, have a think about the keywords in the content of your website. How often can you write the same word and still have the content make sense and be relevant and be interesting to the reader? Not very often I'm guessing.

However, directory listings don't have that problem - not only do they have categories and sections and search words etc they also have a whole heap of businesses advertising with them (either paid or free).

Quite often they will also provide free space - say a paragraph or two for each business to explain their services and products - also adding to the directories keyword content.

Directories will usually provide a free service that will allow a business to provide a link to their website - the number of links to other websites is another technique used by search engines to rank results.

So now you can see why directory listings are usually at the top and why it's very difficult for any single business to become the first result.

You can also see the benefit in listing your business with directories - either free or paid - there are a lot out there. Even though your potential customer might be sent to the directory first - it's still your company that's listed in the end!
