Here are some tips:
- Try and make your domain name as similar to your business or product name as possible. If you use slang or company initials, your customers might not be able to find you. i.e sewspecial.com is better than ss.com as people know what your company name is and what your website is about.
- Use a Keyword in your domain name i.e www.enchantedweb.com.au - This can help with search engine rankings.
- Short and Sweet - Keep your domain name as short as possible - easy to remember and easy to type! (the maximum length for a domain name is 63 characters).
- KISS (keep it simple silly) - Make sure your domain name is easy to remember and not difficult to describe to customers. Don't use hyphens or underscores or other special characters. You don't want your customers going to competitors websites with similar names!
- Availability - when you've chosen your domain name, check that it's available - you might find that someone else already has your domain name. Most domain name registers have an option to check on availability (or you could just type it into your browser).
- Extensions - consider if you want a .com or a .com.au or a .net or .net.au etc. - You have to be a registered Australian business or company to use the .com.au or .net.au extensions whilst the .com or .net can be purchased by anyone with a claim to them.
