In the face of terrible disasters like Cyclone Yasi in Queensland, Australia and now the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and the recent events in Egypt and Libya, it is timely to reflect on the impact that Social Media has on our lives and in today's world.
Social Media has been instrumental in providing information during these events and has been a vital source of communication around the world.
One remarkable story I heard of in regards to the NZ earthquake, is of a sister living in Auckland who couldn't contact her father in Christchurch.
Apparently she rang her brother in San Francisco, who tweeted a request to his followers for anyone in their father's location to contact him. His friends re-tweeted the request and soon after one man contacted him.
This man was sitting in traffic near the location and volunteered to walk to the father's house to see if he was safe. Ten minutes later, the man contacted the brother and advised that the father was safe in his car - although his house was damaged. The brother in turn contacted his sister and let her know.
I think technology is amazing, and I think this is a perfect example of how powerful social media really is.
My thoughts go out to those affected by the recent quake and also affected by other recent events.
Kind regards
