What is a domain name?

A domain name is the 'www.mycompany.com.au' address that your web visitors type into a web browser in order to get to your website.

A domain name can come in many forms.  Many Australian businesses tend to use the .com.au or .net.au extensions and to do this you must be an Australian Registered Company or a business with a registered business number (ABN, BRN, BN).

The domain name you choose should be close to or exactly that of your business name, and all registrations are subject to availability.

Other domain name extensions include .com, .biz, .net, .info and .org.  These domain names are not restricted and anyone can register them.

If you are a non-commercial organisation (charity) you can register for a .org.au or a .asn.au domain name. The domain name should reflect the organisation it represents .

If you want a more personal domain name perhaps for your personal memoirs, you can register a .id.au domain name. You can register any personal name by which you are known.

If you have an international business you could consider registering multiple domain names, some examples include .co.nz, net.nz or .co.uk or .me.uk.

There are many domain name registrars within Australia and domain names range in prices and availability.
