What are Meta Tags?

I was recently asked the question "What are Meta Tags".

Your website should contain a header section contained within the code. This code is not visible to viewers but is used to provide information, descriptions and definitions of your website.

Meta Tags are part of this header section and include the more commonly known meta description and meta keywords. There are also several other tags such as : meta refresh tag, meta robots tag, meta copyright tag and the meta author tag.

These tags are used to provide information to data agents e.g. search engines like Google or Bing. Initially the search engines used the meta information to rank your website in it's results, and although this is not currently the case, they are still important and should be included.
