Design Vs Searchability

I recently attended a business conference where the presenter stated that Google (and I'm assuming other search engines) don't see the design of your website they only look at the code and content on your website.

As a website designer, with a love of making things look beautiful, I was a bit miffed with this statement however as a logical person, I can see his point.

Obviously Google (and other search engines) have robots (or computer programs) that run through your website and depending on the algorithm they use, churn out the results based on a mathematical basis - this has nothing to do with the design aspect of your site.

I believe that it's great to have your site appear up high on the search engine results - how else are customers that don't know about you going to find you?  BUT what happens when your customers get to your site - if your site doesn't look professional or they can't find the information they need then they are going to bounce right off your page and head on down to the next website!

You as the website owner must consider this when designing and developing your website. Are your customers new or existing? Do you advertise in other forms - ie. is the only way your customers find you by searching in search engines or do they already know your business name?

The best solution is to satisfy both needs as best you can, with the budget you have - so make sure your website designer includes the basic techniques to satisfy the robots AND designs your site so that your Customers can find the information they want on a professional looking website.
