How can I improve my Search Engine Results?

Here are some ways to improve your search engine results:-
  • Make sure your page titles are unique and accurate. Your page title appears in the first line of what users see in the search results screen. It also appears ontop of the browser when they view your page. The page title is placed in the 'title' tag, most wysiwyg software will prompt you for a page title.
  • It is important to include a description of what your page is about. The description is not usually shown by the browsers but is used by the search engines to match your page to the query. The description should be concise and informative and can be one to two sentences. The description is placed in the 'description' meta tag.
  • Ensure that each of your pages have a meaningful and descriptive name, page 1 means nothing to a search engine.
  • Make your site user friendly, ensure that you plan your site with the customer in mind. Think of ways that your customer would look for the various products, prices or articles on your site and try and group them in like minded categories.
  • Provide quality content. You are the expert in your field, if other websites link to your site for your content, customers will follow. These recommendations can help improve your ranking.
  • Make sure any links on your site are clear in describing what they link to - again page 1 means nothing. If you have several publications on your site, ensure that they are named appropriately so that the search engines can see if the documents relate to the customers query.
  • Include "alt" tags on images, not only does this improve accessibility to your site, it allows search engines to see if your images relate to the customers query.
